Our Musical Activities

To say the least, Yvonne and Norman lead very active musical lives. Here are most of the various groups that one or both of us have been involved in recently. Listed are performances from the current season and, if known, future scheduled performance(s) for each:

Myrtlewood Ensemble - Yvonne and Norm joined with CJ Osman to begin this group as a recorder trio in April 2006.

Gold Beach Brass Quartet ("Gold BBQ") - Yvonne and Norm partnered with Mike DeRoest and Megan Delaney to form this group in September 2004. Megan played first trumpet, Norm played second trumpet, Mike played first trombone, and Yvonne played second trombone. The quartet disbanded in the spring of 2005 when Megan graduated from Gold Beach High School and prepared to leave town to continue her studies at the University of Oregon.

Kammeroque Ensemble - Yvonne and Norm joined this group in February 2004 playing recorders. In addition to recorders, Yvonne has played keyboards, trombone, and euphonium as well while Norm has played oboe, trombone, euphonium, and alto saxophone. Norm has also arranged a number of pieces for the group, including some Scott Joplin rags, Andrea Gabrieli ricercares, and more. The September 2004 performance included his arrangement (for violin, viola, cello, recorder quintet, alto saxophone, and piano) of the "Swan Lake Prelude" from Tchaikowsky's ballet, the October 2004 performance included an arrangement for a similarly unusual combination of instruments of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from the ballet "Pier Gynt" by Grieg, and the January 2005 performance included some six- and seven-part Elizabethan madrigals arranged for four or five recorders plus violin and viola. The ensemble began an extended hiatus after the July 31, 2005, performance.

Brookings Community Jazz Band - Yvonne and Norm joined this group in December 2003 with Yvonne on third trombone and Norm on bass trombone. Yvonne later took over bass trombone while Norm shared lead and second parts with Archie LeCoque (former trombonist with Stan Kenton). The group disbanded in the spring of 2006.

Bones Northwest - Yvonne and Norm partnered with Mike DeRoest to form this group in October 2003. Beginning as a trio, it expanded into a quartet in April 2004 with the addition of Ed Propst. As a larger ensemble involving as many as fifteen trombone players at a time for special occasions, the group hoped to include as many regional trombone players as possible and encourage school students to consider choosing the trombone as their instrument of choice. The group performed several pieces arranged for the ensemble by Norm. After the spring of 2005 the quartet was cut in half (and indefinitely disbanded) when Ed went to graduate school at Oregon State University and Mike accepted the band director position at Phoenix (OR) High School.

Curry/Del Norte Orchestra - Yvonne and Norm joined this group in November 2003 with Yvonne on second trombone and Norm on principal oboe, occasional percussion (usually drum set), tenor and bass trombone, alto saxophone, and trumpet. In September 2004 Yvonne moved to the percussion section playing primarily tympani and keyboards but filling in on trombone as needed. In August 2007 both Yvonne and Norm were elected to the CDNO's Board of Directors and Yvonne was elected to be Board Secretary. In August 2009 both were re-elected to the Board with Norman elected as President of the Board and Yvonne re-elected as Secretary. In 2010 Norm stepped down to Vice President of the Board and Yvonne continued as secretary. In 2011, both chose to "retire" from the Board. [* = tentative date(s)]
